Scenic and Destination Hikes Adirondack Park Region
Trail Head:
Pilot Knob
Length: a 5.8 mile round trip
Difficulty: Difficult
Activities: hiking
Buck Mountain can be approached from the north or the south; both trails involve a steady climb to the top. The southern approach offers more overlooks along the way.
You'll only go up just shy of 2,000 feet to the top of Buck Mountain at 2,448 feet. The summit is very rocky with great views all around. The trail follows then crosses Butternut Brook a few times, turns left at the intersection with the Butternut Brook Trail, and has many switchbacks on its ascent to the summit. There are a few steep pitches as you reach the summit with a few views of the southern section of Lake George along the way.1
Over the lake on a clear day you will see the High Peaks towering to the north.
WARNING: Rattlesnakes inhabit the rock crevices on many of Lake George's mountains. Take extra care when reaching or climbing around rocks and crevices and the use of high boots is recommended.1
Pilot Knob Trailhead: Take State Rt. 149 to Rt. 9L. Turn left on to Rt. 9L heading north. Take Rt. 9L for nearly 5 miles and turn right at the sign for Kattskill Bay and Pilot Knob. The parking lot is 3.5 miles on the right hand side. There is a trail register at the trailhead.
