Mt. Van Hoevenberg can be reached from the south or north, a moderate level climb coming from either direction. Mt. VanHoevenberg's North Side is home to the Verizon Sports Complex and hosted events for the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Games. While the north side of the mountain does not offer a wilderness setting, one would not know it by hiking up the south side. The south side is truly wild.1

From the south approach, start out with a pleasant and mostly level walk, finishing with a relatively easy climb up a wooded hillside to several open ledges that offer good views of the High Peaks to the south.

Parking areas for the trailhead are on South Meadow Road. From Rt. 73 turn on to ADK Loj Road. ADK Loj Road is about five miles before or after Lake Placid depending on which way you are heading. Continue for about 4 miles down ADK Loj Road until you see the DEC sign for South Meadows, it will be on your left. The Trailhead for Mt. VanHoevenberg is 0.3 miles down South Meadow Road with parking areas just before and after the start of the trail.

Allow two hours to reach the summit for a family with young children. Experienced hikers can plan on one hour to the top.
